Shrewsbury Youth Hockey Assocation
On July 20, 1973 a group of Shrewsbury parents organized and submitted Articles of Incorporation with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts forming Shrewsbury Youth Hockey Association Inc., an all volunteer, non-profit youth hockey program.
The philosophy of the founding fathers remains the same to this day; to develop standards of good citizenship, sportsmanship, and respect in an environment that will build healthy bodies and strong minds. The slogan adopted for the league at that time was “Keep our youth out of hot water, put them on the ice!” SYHA welcomes all children between the ages of four and seventeen who wish to participate in hockey and/or the Learn to Skate program.
The Early Years of SYHA
SYHA originally started out with one Mite, Squirt, Peewee, and Bantam team and adopted a Colonial hat with a hockey stick and puck as its logo. Enrollment started to grow throughout the 70’s. In the early 80’s, the organization was poised to merge with another youth program. The merger was voted down by one vote.
After the merger vote failed, a new Board of Directors was elected and the organization has never looked back. The logo then was changed to a Colonial skater with a hockey stick and puck. The program began to grow more rapidly in the late 80’s with enrollment more than doubling in the past ten years. The logo was phased out in the mid 90’s and at the same time a new uniform design was unveiled. The new logo simply became the name Shrewsbury.
SYHA saw its first web presence in 1999 participating with many other organizations on a group site. It was an immediate success. In 2001 SYHA purchased the rights to WWW.SYHA.NET the slogan “shoot for the net” would remind people of the prefix of the domain name. In 2003 SYHA purchased the rights to WWW.SYHA.COM, hosted their own website, and created e-mail for the Board of Directors.
SYHA will begin its 44th season on September 1, 2017. All of the teams promote the Town of Shrewsbury as they participate in youth leagues located in central and eastern MA. All of the teams play games in the Northstar Youth Forum in Westborough or the Valley League.
Youth hockey traditionally has one of the longest seasons of all youth sports. The season starts the end of August and ends the middle of April. It takes a huge commitment by both the players and their parents throughout the season. Most teams will play 25-30 games and 60 on ice practices.
Youth hockey is one of the most expensive sports to participate in due to ice costs, uniforms, and individual protective equipment. Fund raising and corporate sponsorship has played a big part to defray costs.
SYHA is a proud member of Mass Hockey, a subsidiary of USA Hockey
